Your Guide to 90%+ Breeding Pairs
By Suriya with information from personal experience making pairs with Shazi and asking a lot of questions of Garthic. Also credits to Pheaux for providing really helpful information. Thread Helpers: Shazi & Trebor -- Please allow questions to be answered by the official Thread Helpers. So it would seem that people still don't know the basics of the new percentage calculations and how to get breeding pairs that are in the 90% range. This is just meant to be a quick reference to explain how to get them.

Basics of Making a Breeding Pair

1.) Pokemon must come from two different Original Trainers and be traded to you by those trainers.
  • *Pokemon adopted from the Shelter have been 'released' and their OT resets. When you adopt it from the Shelter, YOU become the new OT.
  • *YOU do not count as an OT when this method is used. If you Trade the pokemon to someone else and get it back, the OT has not changed and you do not gain the 20% bonus.
2.) Each traded pokemon from a seperate person gives you a 20% boost to the breeding percentage. You only get this boost once. More trades do not mean more bonuses.
  • Ex: Shazi and I both get X pokemon for person A and trade them to person A. Person A now has two pokemon from differnt OTs with the 20% bonus. Neither pokemon was originally Person A's and therefore will potentially give a 90%+ pair.
3.) They should, ideally, be from different lines (as in different breeders, for the OT). Getting them from two different OTs usually achieves this. Pokemon hatched from eggs adopted from the Lab seem to be extremely good for making pairs. Lab pokemon do not give a breeding bonus. This was tested and debunked. Remember that once a pokemon pair has 'seen' each other (and by that I mean they have been put in the Daycare with each other) their percentage will NOT change if they are Traded and see each other again. The percentage is locked. You will need to start over.

A Helpful Breakdown by Emmy

If it helps any, here are three of Suríya's examples broken down into simple steps for those still having trouble understanding the system: Scenario 1 User A hatches and releases Pokemon. User B adopts Pokemon. User B is the OT. Scenario 2 User A hatches and trades Pokemon to User B. User B releases Pokemon. User C adopts Pokemon. User A is the OT. Scenario 3 User A hatches and releases Pokemon. User B adopts and trades to User C. User B is the OT. Trading before release overrides the Shelter's OT reset. Practice Scenario User A hatches and releases Pokemon. User B adopts and releases Pokemon. User C adopts and trades Pokemon to User D. User D releases Pokemon. User B adopts Pokemon and trades back to User A. Who is the OT in this scenario?

ANSWER

User C is the OT. STEPS 1 and 2 can be ignored because no trade took place before the Pokemon's first and second release. Trading the Pokemon for the first time in STEP 3 designates User C as the OT. Every STEP afterward can be ignored.

What About Wonder Trading?

Wonder trading works almost exactly like a normal trade, the first person who traded the pokemon, whether that be a regular trade or a wonder trade, is locked in as the OT. The exception to this are pokemon wonder traded before February 1st 2016. These will not have an OT locked in place, due to changes made to wonder trading along with the side revamp that happened during this time. The old wonder trading system renders the pokemon not compatible with the current breeding system. An easy way to see at a glance if your pokemon is wondertraded at the right time is to check the timeline. As you can see with this Cottonee I have there are 3 wonder trades that do not list any trainers. Because this entry is a trade, but does not have the listings for who the trade was to or from the system does not recognise who the OT is and will not grant the 20% boost.

Monogender and Genderless pokemon

Monogender (male or female only species) Pokemon work a little differently. Some had a matching counter species (Miltank and Tauros, Vullaby and Rufflet) while others don't (Jynx, Tsareena etc) but ultimately the best way to breed them is to pair them with a pokemon of similar typing, body shape and egg group. Please note that monogender fakemon such as Caprikid and Valkind will make 99% pairs with matching egg group fakemon due to the nature of how they are put into the system. For pokemon that change body shape during evolution this can have an effect on which pokemon they breed better with so if you are unsure, check the body shapes of the pokemon you are trying to pair together. The more similar in body shape and size they are the better they pair. Genderless pokemon on the other hand are ones without any gender, like magnemite or golett. A genderless pokemon will have this symbol in place of the male or female symbol. These pokemon can only be bred with a ditto. As for their max pair % many of them will not reach 90% so below we have collected information which should be their known highest pairings. We'd like to thank everyone who has offered up what they know to make this guide better! Once again a HUGE thank you to Pheaux for their extensive testing and compiling of monogender and genderless pokemon please check their charts for a more frequently updated listing of possible pairs for monogender and genderless pokemon! Unown breeding Unown breeding is it's own beast, we reccomend getting two of the same letter that can make a maximum of 60% compatibility. Different letters are very different and we will not be putting that here. If you don't have the letter you want please check out This unown calculator to figure out what you would need.

Level effects on Breeding

Level plays a pretty large role in breeding, several examples below will show exactly what we mean by this First a level 100 pair with a 99% base compatibility, full happiness. As you can see, they will breed quite well. Next a a pair that has not a large gap, but a gap all the same. As you can see, this gap causes a drop in their final production rate. -7% isn't a whole lot so this shouldn't be too much of an issue. Here is a pair that will highlight exactly why level is so crucial to egg production. A level 1 and a level 100 pokemon. As you can see, the gap is so large, they will not make an egg. This is in conjunction with the scatterbug being level 1 and giving a further minus due to it's low level. and finally, from my testing it appears that the "low level" debuff will use whichever pokemon is the lowest level, and appears to be the amount of levels below 50 the pokemon is. So please, if you take anything from this, take that you need to level your pairs up to maximise their egg production!

FAQ

Got a question? Check here to see if it's been asked a few times before!

How do I see the % of a pair?

You will need a match up checker from the daycare in order to see their %

I got a 70% pair what did I do wrong?

If you got a 70% pair it means you only got one different OT than yourself. Make sure the pokemon you are pairing are from two different people that aren't you.

What is the max % of X pokemon?

Within the monogender and genderless pokemon section are tables which should give you the known max % of pokemon. If it's not there feel free to ask and we'll try our best to get the information!

How do I find the OT of a pokemon?

A pokemon's summary is your friend! On the summary page of a pokemon is their timeline which lists all of the things that have happened to a pokemon. To work out a pokemon's OT look for a trade (a wonder trade or a regular trade it doesn't really matter) and the person who sent the pokemon in it's very first trade is the OT

Guild Jigglypuff is monogender why is it not listed?

Since guild jigglypuff can get 99% with a regular female Jiggly we didn't feel the need to list it under our monogender listings. It functions as a normal pair.

What does it mean when it says "best case scenario?"

The % displayed for your pokemon's breeding compatibility is their how they breed when they are at their best. Factors such as happiness, level, level gap all affect how well the actual breeding chance is calculated at the time of egg production. Ideally you will want a high level pair at the same level with max happiness to get as close to the best case scenario as possible.

I did everything the guide said how come my pair isn't 99%?

There's a little bit of random chance in here. Having two pokemon from two different OTs doesn't automatically make them 99% compatible, there's a little but of random varience in there that can make a pair that meets these criteria anywhere from 90-99% compatible~

My exclusive pair have 99% compatibility but they barely make eggs, why is that?

Exclusives and varients have a lowered breeding rate to normal pokemon.

Question with point 1, what happens if you use a Pokemon you hatched yourself? I'm trying to breed this Golett and this Ditto, the latter of which I hatched myself. They've only 46%, which I figure might happen since they're genderless and one is Ditto, but I'm not sure after reading this. I figured just 2 different OTs were fine, but do they both have to not be from you at all?

They should come from other people. That is how they gain the 20% - from being traded TO you. You can breed them yourself and trade them and get them back... but that will NOT give you the bonus. Cooperation with your fellow players nets you a bonus to your breeding pairs. Now, if I were to send you a Golett and you were to purchase a Ditto from Elta and we both traded you the two pokemon would have the potential to give you a good percentage. *Edit* Point of fact, you CAN get a very nice genderless pair; as several people have exclusive genderless and Cyrogonal pairs that are made using these methods.

Wow for some reason I could not figure this out, thank you! Quick question though, does evolution play any part in this? For example, if I have a skitty + delcatty pair that are both close/same in level, does it make any difference that one is evolved or no?

Not for the purpose of pairing for numbers, no. Perhaps it makes a difference for how many eggs are produced (as mentioned at the end, even a pair of 99% that are 50 levels apart wont produce as much as a pair close in level), but I have a 94 HootHoot/Noctowl pair that are near in level and still in the 90%s.

I'm not sure that the shelter does change the OT. I had two Vivillions in my daycare that I was the OT for, and they had a 49% compatibility. I switched one out for a pokemon I recieved the egg of from the shelter and as far as I can tell the OT is still the trainer who's pokemon lay the eggs. The two have a 59% compatibility, and only one of them was bred by me, but both were hatched by me.

So there is a lot wrong with your post. I'll start from the bottom and go up. You hatched the eggs. That is why your pair sucked. You cannot be the OT/Breeder of the pokemon you are pairing. You cannot adopt them from the Shelter for yourself. You MUST get them from two different people. The Shelter DOES change the OT because it's like a dog rescue. You give up your dog/pokemon -- you are not the trainer anymore. That doesn't mean that you can put your pokemon in the Shelter and readopt them, you still bred them. You didn't get them from another person. Try again, with the help of a couple friends. Also, this guide was written with the assistance of Garthic; I'm pretty sure he knows what he's talking about.

I get why the first pair sucked. But the new pairing is 10% better. I guess I just don't understand why that is since they should be identical given that the only difference is that I didn't breed the egg of one of the pokemon in the second pairing. And the egg I didn't breed I got from the shelter and hatched myself. It still shows the breeder as the first username in its history, so I assumed that indicated the OT; which is apparently wrong. I didn't realise Garthic helped with the guide.

The bonus comes from being traded to you. By other people. I'm not sure where the disconnect is. You are the only one having a problem with the guide; this has been used to make A LOT of pairs in my click group.

The 10% difference from my first pair to the second can't come from that since I didn't trade for either of them. I don't see where the disconnect is in describing my situation which is what's causing the confusion in the first place. However, since I also don't like condecending people who don't bother reading my posts in their entirety I'm just going to stop posting here and live with the confusion.
